Back when they were doing the "experiment" on whether hours of experience should
count as much as clinical hours, I had to figure my hours before testing for
recertification.  It was while I was still wearing 2 hats-primarily postpartum
RN who was also the lactation resource, but without dedicated lactation hours.
What I did was:
1 - for 3 weeks, I kept close track of how many hours (by 1/4 hour increments)
were spent on some form of lactation work (teaching moms , teaching staff,
direct help for moms).
2 - I eliminated one of the 3 weeks because i had a much higher than average
amount of time spent on lactation
3 - I then divided the result by the total hours worked to get a percentage of
time spent on lactsation
4 - that percentage was aplied to the total hours worked for the year (it might
have been for 2 years-don 't remember for sure)
The resulting number of hours was well above the required number, so I felt
comfortable that it was reliable.
