Hi everyone,
I just wanted to update all the wonderful people that responded to my post.
To refresh, I have been taking care of a Mom and baby in our NICU. She
delivered on the 12th of February at 34 weeks. During pregnancy she had her
gallbladder out and in the process her main bile duct was clamped. She has
had so many problems with surgeries, drains, x-rays, jaundice, etc., all
while pregnant.
I had asked the question of how to help her get milk since we were not seeing
any increase in supply.
She was able to take reglan and we saw only a small increase, from 2 to 10cc
per pumping. Baby at the breast would average about 15cc per feed if awake
and eager. This poor women tried everything I suggested and gave it her best
shot.
She ended up having her c-section scar getting infected with it needing to be
packed twice a week for six weeks. We sent the baby home yesterday and the
Mom has decided to stop breast feeding. This was a heart wrenching decision
for her to make but she could not physically and emotionally do it anymore.
I supported her and even shed a tear with her and told her how much I admired
her strength through all this adversity. She gave her baby two weeks of
breast milk which was better than nothing at all.
So, thanks to all that helped answer my questions. This was a wonderful
family to care for.
Lori Lindsey, RNC IBCLC
