Cindy,
I forgot to say that since baby is getting so many bottles, I would not be
sure if the tongue thrusting is caused by the bottles, or from an underlying
problem. Having said that, I have seen many babies with this type of pattern
and they are extremely fussy because they haven't figured out how to get
food properly and don't yet trust feeding. Again, if the tongue thrusting,
arching, and screaming, is evident on both breast and bottle then it points
to an underlying problem. If baby does this on a bottle also, then yes, he
needs to be assessed by an OT or SLP. At that point, I tell the pedi it is a
"Feeding Problem" not just a breastfeeding problem (because around here they
don't care unless baby can't bottle feed).
