I find that many mothers come to breastfeeding with a pre-determined
agenda for weaning. It might be a few weeks, a few months or longer. If
they reach that time point or beyond and haven't really gotten "hooked"
on the breastfeeding experience or are still experiencing any
challenges, they say, in effect, "I have met my goal, fulfilled my
responsibility, so I have no qualms about changing to bottle." I
suspect that the longer a mom initially plans to breastfeed, if she has
a time in mind, the more likely she is to keep on even if there are
challenges up to that point in time. It would make for an interesting
area of research-does initial breastfeeding duration goal affect actual
length of breastfeeding? and does initial breastfeeding duration goal
affect willingness to work through challenges?
Winnie
