Mary Jane has mentioned the new article from the February issue of?American Journal of Public Health on the adverse outcomes to breastfeeding with the distribution of commercial discharge bags. This can be added to the recent article in the December issue of Breastfeeding Medicine, http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/bfm.2007.0016?on the industry sponsored diaper bag distribution in Massachusetts. I will have an article coming out in Mothering Magazine in February on the bags also. With this type of attention it may be a good opportunity to start placing the seeds of change in institutions where the bags are still distributed. Perhaps these articles could be given to hospital CEOs with the question of why the hospital continues to market unnecessary products to vulnerable patients, especially?under the increased scrutiny of conflict of interest.

Mary Jane's description of the disappearance of breastfeeding oriented?mouse pads should be followed up. This is part of the outcome of allowing formula reps unrestricted access to the maternity unit. If the rep actually was involved with removing these items, he or she should be reported to the company's?district manager and forbidden to enter the hospital. One of the things NABA has noticed in this last round of Code monitoring is the increased aggressiveness of formula reps and the lack of enforcement of hospital vendor policies.
