I searched the archives on photo retina keratotomy (PRK) and only found
someone asking the same question and no one answering it.  Opthamologists in
our area refuse to do this elective surgery if the mother is still
breastfeeding (and will refrain from doing the procedure for 3 months after
breastfeeding has ceased).  The reasoning is because the hormones of
pregnancy and lactation change or alter vision for short periods.  Is this
standard protocol?  Does anyone know what studies this is based on?  What
hormones effect this vision change and wouldn't women on birth control pills
be in the same boat?  The concern is that mothers will wean their babies
earlier than necessary in order to have this elective surgery. (there is a
specific case right now in need of some answers)  Of course, we can talk to
moms about all the reasons why not to wean but I am wondering if anyone on
this list has more information than we have locally at the moment.   Valerie
