I just received my certification a few weeks ago, but have worked with mothers, babies and breastfeeding as an RN for over 30 years. This is my first
posting.
Someone asked (last week, I think--I'm a little backlogged in my email reading) how to advise moms to obtain enough EFA's. I started taking ground
flaxseed several months ago after reading its praises in many different sources. A nutritionist had advised it to me awhile ago for perimenopause
symptoms. It helped many of my own symptoms- including ankle pain from a bad sprain that persisted for over a year and has pretty much disappeared.
I have been "prescribing" it to my kids, friends, co-workers and anyone who will listen. According to that nutritionist, this is the
best source of omega-3's, which most people are deficient in, compared to omega-6's, which the majority of people get enough of. You can either buy
it ground in a vacuum pack, or whole seeds and grind yourself in a coffee grinder. It should be refrigerated to prevent rancidity. Adult dose is
about 2-3 tablespoons/day, either sprinkled on other foods or mixed into a drink like juice or a shake.
Now, about Gilmore Girls, a show I generally really like: about two weeks ago, a pregnant character hired a midwife (they didn't specify if
she was a nurse or lay CNM). She was a rigid,self-righteous fanatic who turned off the show's main characters to the childbirth experience, and I'm
sure similarly turned off many viewers. On last night's episode, which I only had time to watch for a few minutes, she came back after the birth as a
rigid, self-righteous fanatic lactation consultant! I tivo'd the episode and plan to watch the rest tonight; then I'm going to email the WB to
express my disgust!
A show that generally shows characters in a human way
finally gives some exposure to midwifery and a lactation specialist, and makes her a horrific stereotype. It's sad that the media puts such negative
spin on such wonderful human experiences, when they are in the position to be a positive influence. Thanks for letting me express this.
