Another report on my experiences in MI.  I did home vss for Henry Ford. They
had 24 hour d/c with follow-up by RN  in home within next 24 hours and
another follow up 2 days later.

 I usually saw a slight weight loss in 2nd 24 hours and eventually began to
expect baby to be at birth weight or beyond on day 4.  Still losing weight
or still below got a lot of attention from me on the BF and another vss in
next 24-48 hours to be sure things had turned around.

So this business about babies losing alot and not regaining for  two weeks
is a major red flag to me.  It means the BF is not working the way it
should, whether it is baby, mom or dyad who has problem.  Today a baby who
comes into our office with a weight loss on day 4-5 is a baby whose intake,
for whatever reason, is not normal.

And again I believe it is related to early separation of mother and baby in
"typical" hospital" experience, not on what sort of anesthesia or IVs etc
that mom got.  I believe the early imprinting of nursing and non separation
would go a long way towards eliminating BF problems.  Maybe not all, as was
described by a home birth mom, but I bet it would help a lot in reducing the
rough starts, train wrecks and early weaning we see over and over.
