Amanda,
Since you are LLL Leader, please make use of your LLL resources and get the
best information fast. Access your own Professional Liaison Department
resources (PL) and Check with Katy Lebbing at the CBI and LLLI for the information
she has. I recall from when I was APL of Illinois that Betty Crase had
compiled quite the list of references on this topic. There may be an information
sheet available as well.
It is HOOEY (unsure of spelling) to ask mothers to "wean after the first
tooth erupts." Nursing places milk farther back in the mouth than a bottle and
milk doesn't drip from the breast when it is not compressed; much unlike the
passive action of a bottle. Many of us have gone through these issues
regarding breastfeeding a child with teeth. Thank goodness it's a familial trait to
get teeth late in our family - all three of my girls didn't get teeth until
close to a year. Even my bottle fed daughter had issues with baby teeth.
Depends on the genetic makeup of enamel and other foods being fed. I recall a baby
in our group that had dental issues and it turns out he was eating raisins
constantly (they're healthy you know ;-) and didn't brush well. The sweet
remains got into the grooves of the back molars and made nice areas of decay. Of
course the Pedodontist blamed breastfeeding.
Please pursue this to provide the Dentist with accurate information.
Best regards,
Mary Kay Smith, RN, IBCLC, LLL Leader
