Winnie,

You are absolutely correct about this one. This can be the single most
potentially dangerous situation in any support group.
I usually handle these type of situations by affirming the mother first.
"Wow, it sounds like you have really researched ......" Then I add this
statement: "I am so glad that .... worked for you and your family" which puts the
responsibility for this practice right where it belongs... with the family,
while also implying that there are other options.
I may also say: "Most popular ideas about ..... have become popular/published
because they do work for some people." Which is also true. If people didn't
find some degree of success, they would all tell their friends, "That didn't
work" and no one would buy the book, or try the technique. Research shows
>>>>>>> about ......., and many mothers find that xxxxx also works and can be less
stressful for everyone involved."
Then I usually ask if someone else has had a positive experience with another
approach.

The challenge with experienced moms in the group is when they come
up with ideas you can't in good conscience agree with. It can be
frustrating when a mom says, "I got my baby to sleep through the
night by just letting her cry it out and now I can get some sleep."
or "I found this wonderful book you all should read. It's called
Baby Wise"!!! I'd be interested in hearing how others of you handle
such situations so as to not attack the mom offering the idea while
letting the rest know there are definitely problems with the
approach the experienced mom is promoting.
