Oh - and I forgot to mention that he also stated that freezing the milk for
24 hours prior to use would render the CMV if it was in the milk
ineffectual. I know one area hospitals policy is to freeze it for 72 hours
prior to use and use donor milk in the interim if they need it before the 72
hours is up.

This really doesn't apply as much to the term healthy baby - mainly to
micro-preemies who have - as Nancy said - less ability to cope with CMV and
therefore are at greater risk for problems

Many women are CMV positive from a past exposure. Are these women not
able to feed their premature babies or are you talking about women who
currently have the infection? Just a little confused on the topic..
Thanks,
Rachel Pfab, RN,IBCLC

Rachel -
I believe Nancy was referring to women with active CMV, not just antibodies.
I recently attended a conferance at which Dr. George Sharpe addressed this
issue. It was interesting to note that if more kids were breastfed in the
US, that as women of childbearing age they would already be immune to CMV
and so the rate of congenitally acquired CMV would be reduced. Yet another
benefit of breastfeeding and danger of formula feeding.
