Jenny,
I too have worked with a mom whose newborn had bloody stools. BAby was
hospitaltized at age 3days with grossly bloody stools. Baby is happily
breastfed now. Mom works as a nurse for the local pediatric
gastroenterologist-how cool is that!
2 resources:
Resolution of stool blood in breast-fed infant with maternal ingestion of
pancreatic enzymes. J Pedieatr Gastroentero Nurt 1999 Oct: 29(4):500
This is an abstract of a poster symposium--not an article. This is referred
to in the Bresastfeeding Answer Book. This mom did not try this approach.
and
Personal communication from the mom I noted above, that she and baby take
Culturelle with Lactobacillus GG.Mom takes one capsule BID PO and baby
takes one capsule PO daily. Mom puts contents of capsule in nursery water
and puts in a medicine pacifier. Mom is now able to eat an ordinary diet
including milk, cheese, eggs, nuts etc. Baby is thriving, only comment is
baby gas occassionally Mom and baby each took Culturelle for 7 days
before she resumed breastfeeding. She had Neocate during that time. All
hemocult tset have been negative since. Baby is about 4 months old. Mom
gets Culturelle at Walgreens for 17.99 bottle of 30 capsules.
Hope your mom finds this remedy works for her!
