My hospital waits several hours before giving baby 1st bath.
When I enter a room of a newborn and parents I will comment on the fact
that it appears that baby has NOT been bathed yet. Frequently the baby is at
breast and the nurse is at computer at bedside doing paper work, etc. I will
then go on to explain to parents that she is so LUCKY to have a nurse that is
mindful of the fact that the fluid the baby has been bathing in for many
months smells and tastes like colostrum. So when baby begins to root and sucks
on its fingers it is still tasting this familiar fluid. Then is smells
colostrum at the breast when placed on moms chest soon after birth. And that
helps baby locate the breast and latch on better for that important initial feed!
At that point mom SMILES and nurse SMILES and everyone is happy. The mom
no longer feels like the nurse is late in getting baby bathed. And the nurse
no longer feels rushed to get the baby bathed. (And that nurse learns
something she can now teach to the next mom.)
