Hi, All: In our hospital, we encourage our moms to try all the common
positions before they go home. Here, the nurses seem to favor teaching
cradle hold, which is personally one of my least favorite holds because
most moms seem to look so uncomfortable with the arm/hand supporting the
breast usually stuck out from her body at a stiff unnatural angle. Couple
that with especially a nervous tense first time mom and she's looking at
neck and shoulder pain after a nursing. I usually tell mom after they've
been trying the different positions that something like clutch is good for
helping a baby learn to latch because it allows her more control over her
breast and baby's head while allowing her to maneuver as she needs to.
Then I tell her that once she and her baby are more comfortable with latch,
most moms seem to gravitate towards the cradle hold or some variation.
As far as latch goes, my personal philosophy is - if she's not sore, baby
is getting good milk transfer, and both she and the baby are comfortable,
then go for it. I believe that for every mom/baby couplet there are that
many holds and latch positions.
