Kathleen,
Not only have I had your experience....I operate in constant fear of
it! As a hospital based LC who started out in the community.....I want
everyone to have the best chance possible to breastfeed! However, moms
have a variety of goals, and the fact that someone entered the hospital
saying "I want to breastfeed" doesn't mean that she will put forth any
extra effort to accomplish this. She might mean ".........if it is easy,
or if it happens naturally.....or, if my baby doesn't demand too much of
me.... You get the picture.
It is very difficult and frustrating to walk that middle line. Women
who say they want to breastfeed...but then turn on you when you tell
them how that can happen...I just don't know what to say!
To further complicate this, I sometimes find that people in the
community (LCs and LLL's) will sometimes turn around and blame the
hospital LC for not helping enough. In that case, I find myself between
a rock and a hard place. It is all very political. thanks for sharing
your experience! It helps me to feel that one of the Mothers in the
field still struggles with this.
