I am from Australia.  I know nothing of anything of this type of research.

I am wondering if the person who gave this mum has got a little confused.  I
do know that mums are being encouraged use cold for engorgement rather than
just specifying cold cabbage leaves.  I understand that there has been some
research into whether it was the cabbage leaves or the cold that helped with
engorgement. I understand (I  have not cited the research just heard it
second hand from someone) that the researches used cabbage leaves, hot packs
and cold pack.  I am not sure about the results of the hot packs but I think
that they found no difference between the cabbage leaves and the cold pack.
The reasoning was that the cold helped with vasodilation to help with the
pain and slow down? of milk synthesis (on reflection not too sure of how
logical this is).  The conclusion was that it was the effect of the cold
that helped with the engorgement.  I have heard of an IBCLC who uses frozen
disposable nappies (unused and clean of course) with great success.

Wishing that I was  not so scatter brained or vague at times :-)
