Hi Terri
I am trying to remain polite (to your friend's surgeon) here.
Please encourage the mother to ask the surgeon to support his
recommendations from the research literature. Breastfeeding is physiologic
and this recommendation makes no sense at all. The onus should be placed on
him to support such a recommendation. It is as ridiculous as recommending
that the child not eat at all for a fortnight following surgery.
Breastfeeding will rehydrate the child more quickly following surgery and
may be the only fluid the child will accept. It will also provide pain
relief, anti-infective and anti-inflammatory actions. It will provide
specific defense against nosocomial infections (because the mother will be
exposed to them while in the hospital too).
