I have permission to post a problem that one of my clients is having with her 6 week old breastfed baby boy. This mother is a dedicated breastfeeding mom and started out with the intention of never giving formula. She called me a few days ago and said that her little has developed terrible gas from her breastmilk. It got to the point that her pediatrician advised her to try a trial of formula. (Nobody told me this was going on.) The milk based formula gave the baby gas just like the breastmilk did but the baby tolerates soy formula without any gas problems. The mother has modified her diet, tried massage, and has instituted reflux precautions, but one breastfeed will bring about terrible gas and a wailing baby. I have searched the archives and have picked up some tips but none have had the slightest hint of success. Right now the mother is filling her refrigerator with pumped milk and bottle feeding soy formula. Any suggestions? The mother, the baby, and I would appreciate any help we can get.
Thanks!
Sue Lewis RN IBCLC
