I agree with Margie, I think we do have some criteria for good positioning
and latch.
These are the things I look for as I try to teach or "fine tune" positioning
and latch for optimal milk transfer:
baby's body in alignment
baby very close to mother, "glued" or "melted" together I say
chin well into breast, cheeks close to breast (I say the baby's cheek next
to the mother's breast looks like the baby's behind), nose slightly back
head sl. extended, not flexed
lips flanged
breast secure in mouth, does not fall out
nipple not misshapen after feeding
milk transfer is accomplished

Sometimes we slightly vary this for anatomical variations, but this would be
some general criteria, as far as what we know today.
