A few years back one of the pump reps (I know that might make the info
biased, but she was comparing two of her own products) spoke to the
issue. She acknowledged that some moms used to using the Classic
reported the Lactina didn't feel as strong when they switched. However,
they also had a few situations where mom started with the Lactina and
later switched to Classic and they felt the Lactina was "stronger". I
think the mechanical measurements showed them virtually the same. I'm
sure this would be the case with other compnaies' models as well.
The point is that it's hard to separate out mom's perceptions and actual
differences in effectiveness. If a mom believes that a different pump
will be more effective, that alone can contribute to her actually
getting more. The pump a mom is using at the time her milk "comes in"
will be seen unconsciously as the better than the one she was using in
the first days when she got very little milk
That's what makes it so difficult to scientifically compare different
pumps. It is a real challenge to eliminate all the other factors and
perceptions that can influence how much milk a mom is able to express in
differing conditions.
