Something about this thread kept striking me as "not quite right," 
especially the references to normal weight gain in the BAB, so I just 
checked it.  The third ed. of the BAB (2003) on page 40 states 
that "average weight gain for the first three months is five to six ounces 
or more per week (140 to 170 grams)".  On page 148 it states that "average 
weight gain for the first three to four months is about six ounces (270 
grams) per week, though it is considered acceptable for some babies to 
gain four or five ounces (113 to 142 grams) per week".  Since I quote such 
numbers often to new mothers and others, and have been using 4 to 7 ounces 
per week as my standard phrase for quite a while, I'm glad to have been 
prompted to look this up again.  I agree with many posters that, although 
some babies do gain slowly and steadily and are fine, we need to carefully 
follow such dyads to ensure that BF is going well.
