The Florida House has introduced a bill (H1399) which in regard to hiv
testing of pregnant women will not require informed consent and revising criteria
for releasing preliminary HIV tests (striking out current law which states "no
positive preliminary test result shall be determined as positive" as well as
other changes). This proposed legislation is hinged on the infallability of hiv
testing. I question the reliability of this testing. HIV antibody testing
has a high degree of false positives--thus the need for several tests before
determining a positive. One of the conditions of creating a false positive test
is pregnancy itself. This is stated on all test kits. This proposed
legislation negates a pregnant woman's right to informed consent--negating NIH
guidelines on hiv testing of pregnant women. Anyone who lives in Florida and is on
this list who is concerned about this proposed revision of our current law,
please write, email, and phone your legislators (bill is in committee right now).
