Hi Lucy
could your co-worker actually be referring to the overhydration with
epidurals, resulting in oedema in the mother? This may cause her areola to
become oedematous and therefore flatten out/distort the nipple?
if so, have a look at this site for 'reverse pressure softening' and more
detailed information.
http://www.health-e-learning.com/breasted_web_articles/reverse_pressure/reverse_pressure.htm
also try searching the archives for 'overhydration' or 'oedematous areola'

hope this helps

Subject: epidural causing flat nipples??

> Hello, my co-worker claims to have heard at a lactation educator training
seminar that epidurals are the cause of flat nipples (post delivery, lasting
several weeks) she claims this was stated by someone prominent in the
lactation field. I tried to find info on this with a literature search but
came up flat (ha, Ha). Anyone out there have this info or the place I can
get the scientific explanation for this phenom? Thanks so much!!
