A preliminary study has shown that there was a significant reduction in the
prevalence of mastitis in Swedish women that resulted when Antisecretory
Factor (AF) was induced in their milk through the ingestion of a specially treated
cereal (Svensson et al, 2004). AF can be produced in the mammary glands and
seems to have an anti-inflammatory effect (Hanson, 2004). Researchers hope
that if AF can be reliably shown to prevent subclinical mastitis, it may be
employed to reduce the risk of transfer of HIV-1 from mother to infant through
breastfeeding.
