I say that tongue in cheek, of course. I want to
broaden my skills base, gain confidence and have some
credentials to teach classes- I'm not certain where
this path ought to lead me though, since I'm in the
thick of raising my children and dh works a lot.

I think I'll start to pursue LLLLeadership, for all
the good things it offers, both to leaders and to
mothers. My main sticking point is "The advantages of
breastfeeding". How do the Leaders here and the
LLLL/IBCLC's reconcile the "advantages" with oh, Diane
Weissinger's wisdom, for example?

Being out in the boonies of Colorado, we are limited
by the certification courses that come our way. The
Healthy Children CLC course was here in February and I
missed it- I assume they'll be here next year for
their 5 day training. What will I be qualifed to do
at the end of that? I have a BS (biochemisty and
biology), am a labor doula but I can't do births
because of the aforementioned hardworking husband.
:-(

how about
http://lactationeducationconsultants.com/dates/
Lactation Consultant Preparation Course They gear
toward "lactation consultant", not "counselor" - does
anyone know if the topics covered are similar? It is
somewhat likely that I could travel to chicago, if the
course was significantly better than the Healthy
Children one.

I looked into Linda Smith's class but at this point I
can't travel for a course. I also wonder if that
would be overkill as a starting point? (no offense
intended, Linda, and please correct me if I'm wrong)

CAPPA at
http://www.childbirthprofessional.com/lactation.asp
has a CLE course that looks pretty, um, short and
fairly light on reading. (I know the Lactation
Institute doesn't give a "CLE" anymore- and I can't
travel to their course.) What exactly is that sort
of CLE "worth" to anyone? I assume I could teach
classes but wouldn't get a whole lot of problem
solving skills.

One further question that the question of "initials"
brings to mind. How many of you approached the IBCLC
exam with absolute confidence so that you would say "I
will be an IBCLC this summer" instead of "I'm sitting
for the exam"? Was that person showing an excess of
hubris?

Kate Hallberg, http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~kolina/advantages-of-formula.html Mom to Ursula (8), Sage (5.75) and Benno (2) Enterobacter sakazakii has contaminated powdered infant formula since the 80's. It has resulted in the infant deaths of preterm infants in various countries (Belgium and USA) and the neurological impairment of a full term infant in Iceland. - http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2002/NEW00849.html
