To complement Pam Morrison's posting on growth of low birth weight babies in Harare, I would like to draw attention of LactNetters to the work of Dr. Rachel Musoke, neonatologist at Kenyatta National Teaching Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, and her colleagues.

Her first article on the 20 g per day weight gain of babies between 1000 and 1750 g on their own mothers' freshly expressed breastmilk appeared in 1989. (Muhudhia SO, Musoke RN. Postnatal weight gain of exclusively breast fed preterm African infants. J Trop Pediatr 35: 241-244.)

Readers may also be interested in her explorations of sodium supplementation, rickets, and growth/morbidity/mortality of abandoned babies, for which abstracts are available online via PubMed.
