I have a question that is not completely addressed in the archives...there
are posts that question, but none that answer, perhaps because there is no
answer?

Mom was diagnosed wtih adrenal hyperplasia as an infant. Has been on
prednisone since one month of age, is now 30 years old. She was on 10 mg
regularly, placed on 15 mg. during pregnancy. To achieve pregnancy was on
clomid followed by artificial insemination. Uneventful pregnancy once
achieved, and baby born full term no complications with normal delivery, no
epidural.

As of day five, no milk. Baby has been fine until day 4, now is being fed
abm with bottle at this point, mom is not sure yet if open to sns, though
that may be the option she ends up with if baby is not willing to go between
bottle and breast. (This is still too new for her to decide, and in reality
the miracle of her baby being here is her great joy, and the breastfeeding is
seen as a "bonus" that may come with the baby that never should have been.)
She says there was breast change during pregnancy....she increased one cup
size. In general, latch is fine per LC in hospital, baby was fine for
hospital stay with only breastfeeding, mom says nursing is comfortable, and
she feels the suck is strong.

Is there any information that indicates the condition itself or the
medication will inhibit milk production permanently? Is there is experience
with typical meds/herbs for milk production being successful for mothers with
CAH? I have read various web pages and research information, but mostly it
relates to breastfeeding babies with CAH, diagnosing CAH, and possibility of
pregnancy with CAH, etc. Not anything I can access that is directly related
to lactation with CAH.

I told mom I would find out if any of the great minds together on Lactnet had
an answer. She is speaking to her endocrinologist on Monday. If there is a
possibility of milk production increasing with time, of course, we will work
on management until then that includes keeping baby at the breast. However,
if mom is unlikely to produce milk, I would like to be able to honestly let
her know her options as we discuss the joys of nursing regardless of milk.

Thanks,
