With regard to the warning sticker from Medela, I have never seen it before. Granted, I have a new account and do not have much retail experience with them. As an LC, I have the knowledge of the potential dangers of using a borrowed pump. Some of my patients may know it, but, they have their reasons, mostly financial, for using a PIS. I have never been able to find any documented cases of infection from using a borrowed pump. Has anyone alse? Of course, I now have my own documented evidence AND the experience of my patients suffering from thrush using these pumps!

My fear is that a mom could re-infect herself by using her NEW pump with baby #2, or re-infect herself after recovering from thrush a few months down the road, especially if she is an over producer, because her PIS is an OPEN system!

Medela clearly needs to redesign their pump system to protect and support breastfeeding! Unfortunately, Medela is saturated in my paricular area so these types of PIS's are everywhere.

The upshot of my recent discovery for me, is that I can be more effective with treatment of a dyad who has thrush, the first time around, and, I can educate new prenatals in my BF classes about the dangers of borrowed PIS pumps. Sadly, half of my moms gave up breastfeeding because of their experience of thrush. I must do what ever is necessary to protect and support breastfeeding!

Jody
