Regarding the ICAN liability insurance, it is certainly better than no
insurance, but the limits of liability are very low - 500,000 limit per
claim/$500,000 annual aggregate -- and the deductible is high -- $5,000 deductible per
claim. My husband works in the commercial insurance industry and liability
settlements can be outrageous. My current policy is for $2,000,000/4,000,000 in
coverage with no deductible and it covers loss of earnings. There is also a
policy available for $1,000,000/3,000,000 in coverage. He has always insisted I
carry the maximum insurance available. I have wondered if there have been any
lawsuits involving lactation consultants and what the outcomes were. I have a
very small, but growing, private practice so my insurance is not supplemental
to any that an employer would provide.

In a related matter, what have any private practice LC's done about the HIPPA
compliance and does it even apply to us? I have clients sign a simple consent
form which tells them I may share their information with other health care or
insurance providers, but it is not detailed as the HIPPA Notices I have been
signing at every medical provider I have been to in recent months.
