Actually, I can recall some ads many years ago (you spring chickens
aren't old enough to remember them) where it was implied very
strongly that smoking was healthy, beneficial and endorsed by "9 out
of 10 doctors"!!!

If only someone were able to bring the kind of lawsuits against
formula companies that have been brought against tobacco companies.
The suits are the only reason you see ads by the companies warning
about hazards of smoking (not "benefits of not-smoking").  It was
part of a settlement agreement that they do the "warning" ads
