All these anecdotes are wonderful! Sometimes I get so focused on the
clinical problem solving that I forget the sweetness of the breastfeeding
family. How often do the happy folks call us, right?

Several years ago, someone on lactnet called for help with a survey of
formula prices across the USA. I took my kiddos to WalMart to make notes.
My daughter was sitting up in the shopping cart, but probably less than a
year old. That would put my son just shy of 5yo, and still nursing. He
asked why we were in the formula aisle, and I told him I was writing down
all the prices for a survey. While there, we were heartbroken to see a
teenage mom holding her baby and the three dollars she had to her name,
scanning the prices as seriously as I was. All she could buy was a small
can of liquid concentrate for $2.77 I still remember the price.

A few minutes later, my son started acting up, and it was a struggle to
finish our trip. I finally stopped everything, got down on his level, and
asked what on earth was going on, because I had seen no obvious trigger,
and it wasn't close to mealtime or bedtime. Eventually figured out that he
had misunderstood me, and thought that I was checking formula prices
because I was going to wean his sister! I had not even considered the
miscommunication as a possibility, because obviously (to me!) a mom who
nurses a five year old certainly does not casually wean an infant!

We sat down on the floor together and cuddled and he wept tears of relief.

I console myself with this memory of his love for his sister when they pick
on each other mercilessly. . .
