Actually a "stranger" doula assigned by the hospital helped my dil 12 years 
ago with her first.  I don't think we can discount the undivided attention 
that another woman gives a woman   in labor.  The doulas position is 
different than a labor nurse who pops in to check on mom, baby and progress 
from time to time.

I agree that the birth experience is part of the BF experience.  Currently 
working with a mom of a 2 week old, difficult midwife delivery, jaundice 
(lights for 17 on day 3 :-( 5% weight loss-continuing, not enough BMs, I 
can't see anything obvious with tongue, suck or postioning. Nursing 
frequently.   Milk present, just not getting transferred for -who knows why?
