Again, I have to agree with Nikki Lee. I don't think these nurses know "good
feeding" when they see one or "effective latch" or much of anything basic
about knowing it is going well unless they have received some rather intense
training from a qualified LC and reading what the LCs say here, I wonder how true
that is. I was at a birth recently with a totally normal delivery not so much
as an IV, and the baby went to breast immediately. The nurse was so
surprised to see a baby do this so soon. Then the nursery nurse came in to do her
work up, and turned to mom and said, "sqeeze your nipple to see if you have milk
yet and I'll let you breastfeed". Mom being the kind of mom who gets a normal
birth in a hospital of 90% plus epidural rate says "Oh, please, you must be
kidding, she already nursed, and milk is not in nipples." Hahah. Being the
good LC I am, I asked moms permission to show the nurse where exactly to find
colostrum. Explained to the nurse that moms can squeeze nipples for hours and
maybe never get a thing, so could she please stop saying that because it means
nothing and sets moms up to doubt themselves. Yikes. Now, I KNOW this nurse
has great LC's in her hospital. I KNOW they spend all the time they are allowed
teaching these nurses what they need to know, but still....So, I would really
like to see a study done with LC's evaluating latch and suckle for the first
24 hours plus after a epidural and then maybe I will buy that "oh, this is the
cadillac birth and not a drop gets to the baby".

Take care,
