Hi Anna,
When I was at Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, we used small
nalgene bottles. You can drill holes in the top for smelling. Add some
fine mesh to keep your scent stuff in. Drill holes on the side for set
screws, so visitors can't remove the tops. They are see-through, but I
think they have "cloudy" white too. Available at the Container Store (on
sale!):

mIndex=4&CATID=253&PRODID=59736

They are virtually break-proof, except oddly enough when I added scent
oil, then they would crack the bottom. They would last, but eventually
would break and need to be replaced. Not sure what oil would do to film
canisters.

Scent oils often don't smell like the real scent and are a bit chemical.
You may just want to pick things that have strong smells. Like a vanilla
bean, cinnamon, etc.

We did not tether them. They were never taken. We also did a version
with glass jars w/ metal lids behind a piece of wood so you couldn't see
the scent stuff, for people to guess.

People love to guess the smells... great for little kids. We also
labeled them in Braille and print, since we felt this would be a good
activity for people with sight-impairment.

Feel free to contact me offline.

I'm working on a program on mummification for my museum education
class (thanks to those of you who responded to my last query!). I'd
like to create some type of scent jars so that students can get a
whiff of the scented oils that were rubbed on the mummies.

What have you found to be the best method for this, keeping in mind
that we are on a tight budget? I was thinking of just putting oil-
soaked cotton balls into film canisters with holes punched in the
lids. Any other ideas?

Also, any ideas for sources of scents? Luckily, San Francisco has no
shortage of shops selling incense and essential oils. I'd like to
include cedar, myrrh, thyme, and juniper.

Finally, any ideas how to turn this into a deeper experience beyond
just "smell this"? I was thinking of also including some other, more
familiar scents (e.g. vanilla, cinnamon) and having them guess which
ones were the ones used by the Egyptians, with some hints.

Thanks for any ideas you can share! You were all really helpful as we
were trying to plan out our mummy's body and internal organs! :)

Anna
