Well, apparently, that instrument was used during the demo in the 1950s, but not during the 1980s and early 1990s when I worked at Buhl Planetarium.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Buhl demonstrators would simply place one hand on top of the Van de Graaff, while using the second hand, and index finger, to spread the charge into the audience by simply pointing at the audience.
