Then try this with kids who cannot read very well.  Obviously these kids
should be better at this task than most good readers.

Patricia,
A favorite visual illusion of mine is to list 8 or 10  words on a large card
that are names for common colors.  Red.  Blue.  Green. Yellow.
The should be printed vertically and in a "random" order.

Red
Green
Blue
Yellow
Green
Red
Yellow
Blue

Each should be printed in large fonts,  so they can be seen by everyone in
your auditorium.
Now,  here's the important part.
Each word must be printed in a DIFFERENT color than the word describes.
In other words,  "RED" must be printed in blue ink.  "YELLOW" must be
printed
in green ink, etc.

Have someone read the list out loud  (rather quickly) and ask them to call
out the color of the INK for each word.......and NOT what the word says.
Makes sense?
Our brains have great difficulty processing this incongruity between word
name and word color.  Try it!
