Cornell Lab of Ornithology
SENIOR DIRECTOR, COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lab of Ornithology is a semi-independent unit of Cornell 
University housed in a state-of-the-art 92,000 sq. ft. science 
building located at Sapsucker Woods Sanctuary. Programs are global in 
scope and audience (FY 2005 budget: $13.5M). Scientific research, 
public education and outreach, citizen-engagement, and biodiversity 
conservation are supported by an international membership and 
participant base numbering in the hundreds of thousands. The Lab is 
deeply committed to exploring innovative uses of the Internet, hosts 
the world's largest archive of natural sounds and videos, and is a 
pioneering leader in engaging citizens in science projects. Its 
authority, products, and partnerships have made the Cornell Lab of 
Ornithology a household name among both amateur bird enthusiasts and 
professional ornithologists.

The Lab seeks a visionary Senior Director of Communications and 
Marketing to develop and implement marketing, recruitment, 
communication, and membership strategies commensurate with the Lab's 
breadth and global potential. One of four senior managers reporting 
to the Executive Director, the Senior Director will oversee staff 
teams in the areas of marketing, public relations and communication, 
wholesale management, web communication, and membership recruitment 
and servicing. Internet-based strategies will play a huge role. Key 
duties include: oversight of all Lab publications and web sites; 
communication and promotion of Lab projects to external audiences, 
especially to the media and the general public; development and 
implementation of strategic marketing plans for all Lab projects and 
enterprises; coordination and tracking of license, royalty, and 
permission contracts; copyright and trademark tracking; 
identification of new revenue-producing opportunities and management 
of business partnerships; oversight of membership recruitment 
initiatives and member servicing.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree with 7 or more years of experience, including 
management and strategic planning. Successful background in 
marketing, communications, and journalism. Knowledge of Internet 
usability, e-commerce, and Internet-based promotional strategies 
essential. Creativity, flexibility, initiative, and entrepreneurship. 
Working knowledge of branding and marketing principles. Collaborative 
problem-solving and change-management skills. Excellent oral and 
written communication skills. Advanced computer skills (word 
processing, graphic design, spreadsheets, content-management 
frameworks). Ability to accept high levels of responsibility and work 
with minimal supervision. Ability to prioritize competing projects 
with fixed timelines, and to manage complex business plans and 
budgets. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to interact 
effectively with senior management, creative programmatic staff, and 
external stakeholders (members, sponsors, donors, etc.). Experience 
with not-for-profit and/or commercial subscription membership 
recruitment strategies, including both direct mail and Internet 
solutions, highly desirable.
