In my experience, I have found that the real issue here isn't about
'believing', it's about 'subscribing' to a package-deal of beliefs dictated
by people's cultural identity.

I have only seen the entrenched beliefs of religious anti-evolutionists (and
militant atheists!) being successfully unpicked by 'outsiders' who have
patiently won confidence and respect.

This is tribal missionary work. Speak softly and hang some gifts in the
trees...

"Believe" has two senses.  The transitive form, taking a direct object,
means "to accept on evidence."  "I believe that Martin works for the NY Hall
of Science."  I have several lines of evidence supporting that assertion.
The intransitive form, without a direct object, means "to accept on faith."
"I believe in Martin's generosity."  I have no independent confirmation for
that statement.  ;-)
