I have to say, reading this exchange has really highlighted that informal science and all its accompaniments (like eval) is a lot like democracy - it's a work in progress. Seriously, though, that's incredibly positive, it means we are really thinking deeply about what we are, how we do it, and what it all means. If we were to all agree sans questions, well, I'd fear the equivalent of impending goosestepping (given the state of formal classroom education, isn't that what we AREN'T about?)
Related note - perhaps the reason the competition flag is raised is because, let's face it, having been in both large and small institutions, big may not be better, but it sure as hell implies it to funders. I have sat on NSF panels where the question of "can the institution pull it off?" was frequently answered by, "well, it's a big institution, they have the resources." NOW let's talk about bias…
