I've done it before, and the wavelenght is not right. The webcams I used
were able to see the IR sent out by remote controls real well but not
'heat' from warm surfaces. You can illuminate a subject with bright IR
LEDs and use a webcam to 'see' in total darkness this way but it is not
usefull for viewing the IR from warm bodies because the camera is not
sensitive to the right wavelength.

There are companies that make hand-held IR cameras that are designed to
detect these wavelengths, however. Maybe that would be what you would
want to use. (They're used for industrial process control and law
enforcement primarily.)

I've seen a ton of hacks to remove the IR filter on digital cameras.   
Its near infra red, but I wonder if someone among us has a)done it  
and b) if it would work at all in the applications being talked  
about.....
