Got this message from a teacher friend of mine who was contacted by the
study PI, Peter Wolf. This study needs a broad public response to make it
effective. If you do programming about severe storms, you might want to
encourage people to participate.

Dave Smith

My name is Pete Wolf, and I am the Science and Operations Officer of the NWS
office in Jacksonville FL. I am collaborating on a major warning study with
students and staff at UNC-Asheville's Atmospheric Sciences Department. The
study examines severe thunderstorm and tornado warning reception,
interpretation, and response for warnings issued across the U.S. east of the
Rockies (and including Colorado and New Mexico) through the end of August.
The study involves a simple public survey, located at
http://www.warningstudy.org . Participants involved in a severe weather
event simply access the website (within 72hrs after event), choose a warning
issued for their county, review the warning message, and complete the short
survey (free, simple, and anonymous).

The aim of the study is to better understand the level of warning
utilization by the public (including school teachers and administrators),
which is hypothesized to be very low for a typical warning (which impacts
its role in protecting life and property). It also focuses on the impact of
warning type, time of issuance, area of the country, size of event, and
one's weather knowledge and experience on the results. It is a critical
study that could lead to improved communication of warning information and
warning response training for school officials and others. The success of
this project depends on getting a large number of participants to the short
survey.

It would be extremely helpful to us if you could share this with school
teachers and administrators across the study region (U.S. east of the
Rockies), and encourage them to access (and get others to) our study website
after thunderstorm events. Again, the survey website is at
http://www.warningstudy.org . Updates on the study are provided at
http://twitter.com/warningstudy . Thank you very much for any assistance you
could provide. Please let me know of any questions you may have on this
important study.

Respectfully,

Pete Wolf, SOO
NWS Jacksonville FL
