Might it be because table tennis balls have too much 'bounce' when 
they first hit the pegs? If you really want to use table tennis 
balls, maybe try wrapping a layer of something soft (pipe lagging?) 
around the pegs? Just the top row of pegs, which the balls are 
dropping onto first.
