Thanks for the alert, Claire! In honor of the Exploratorium's last day at
"home" I just lifted some favorite Frank quotes out of my copy
of "Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens: Frank Oppenheimer and the World
He Made Up" by K.C. Cole:

"The Exploratorium is not designed to glorify anything. We have not built
exhibits whose primary message is 'Hasn't someone done a great service to
the American way of life?'"

"No scientist works on Formica! You got to be able to bang with your
hammer, burn holes with your soldering gun; it's gotta look like a real
environment that a scientist would work in. That's the only way people can
know what it's like...I don't care how expensive it is, it's gotta look
cheap."

Regarding his students (who had not climbed trees or taken apart bicycles)--
"Their experience was so meager, their contact with the natural world so
restricted, that I thought a place was needed where they could walk through
a kind of woods of natural phenomena."
