Go for the UV sensitive beads mentioned by Kate Hintz. I've seen something
similar sold as children's wrist jewelry in the UK, advertised as reacting
to direct sunlight. These sound like the same thing and should do exactly
what you require, if you use a safe UV light source to activate them.

When I first read the question I thought, this is impossible! I am tempted
to experiment, myself. Can you share with us what you are trying to
achieve: it sounds interesting?
