I worked on a Shackleton exhibit years ago at the American Museum of  
Natural History which used real sextants fitted with sensors, so you  
could take a 'real' reading on a projected ocean.  In that case the  
time calculation was done by the computer however.  The exhibit was  
last seen in Dallas in 2005, but may still be touring... here are some
