ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

The LA Makerspace just launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund
equipment and staffing and it has a collaboration with the Natural History
Museum in LA. I don't think they get any funding from the museum--just
expertise. The folks running the LA makerspace have quite a bit of
experience in connecting informal education with research and they are
well-connected in general. Someone from Make magazine is teaching an
upcoming Arduino class for them. Let me know if you want me to introduce
you via e-mail.

A second possibility--thought not quite the direction you described: Some
museums aren't helping to facilitate the external making so much as
offering a venue for the kids' final products.I'm helping a couple of
museums look into displaying kids' work (generated in onsite or external
makerspaces) in exhibitions as a fresh way to illustrate science topics
like sensors or electricity. We'll see how that plays out--it could serve
as a nice motivator to elevate the kids' sense of accomplishment and also
raise awareness among young museum visitors about the maker movement and
availability and affordability of electronic components. The main barrier
kids have mentioned to me is not knowing "where to find the stuff" so that
would probably be part of the information shared in the displays.
