Hi charlie:

I think the idea that people will continue to learn from a set of mute equipment, without people intrinsic to the learning experience, is more likely to fade as a learning fad than making. There was a fascinating exhibition at MOMA called A Century of Children in which the idea of learning spaces incorporating the use of tools, design, fabrication technologies of all kinds in open ended programs arose in several different environments (italy, france, germany, the UK and US) at different times during the century. Many of them fit fairly precisely the general image of Maker spaces.

From what I can see, it was the Explo that proposed the idea that there could be deep and rich learning experiences that depended principally on equipment. That was a true outlier, and a wonderfully significant idea. But I am not sure that it has ever been done as well as, let alone better than, the originals.

Best wishes to all for a happy new year!

Clearly not a truly scientific poll, but then again the results wouldn't be published as such....It would be a useful piece of information. I'm sure the make space craze will pass into oblivion as an entity in a few years, but it has novelty as fundable currency at this point.
