I can't resist quoting a short poem, "Evidence," by Wendy Cope,
published in the Times Literary Supplement earlier this year (March
9, 2012).

==========

Evidence

"A great deal of anecdotal evidence suggests that we respond
positively to birdsong."
Scientific researcher quoted in _The Daily Telegraph_ 8.2.2012

Centuries of English verse
Suggest the selfsame thing:
A negative response is rare when birds are heard to sing.

_What's the use of poetry?_
They ask. Well, her's a start:
It's anecdotal evidence
About the human heart.

Wendy Cope
