How wonderful! We just did this in an inquiry based camp and found it to be very successful! I would love to turn it into an exhibit. Have Fun!

We did not find it very easy to get the wheels changed (and alignment was one of the number one reasons cars were slower or faster). So I would love to hear if you come up with a good way for this to work, without lots of wobbling.

We did however give the kids the chance to add graphite (a bit messy) and had good results speeding up the cars that way.

We found double stick tape worked pretty well for the weights (which were lead, so we painted them for extra protection - next time I would invest in a different metal) but they took off the paint. I think putty might have been an even better solution.

I understand that legoland has a very engaging version of this - of course with lego cars :-)

Best,
Lee Anne

Subject: Pinewood Derby interchangeable wheel/ axel sets

We are creating a Pinewood Derby exhibit where visitors can make their
own derby cars. In this self-directed activity, visitors will be able to
manipulate variables such as wheel size, body shape, and weight
placement. I'm looking for a manufacturer of wheel/ axel sets that fit a
standard derby car size and can be interchanged. The parts will be in
bins at work stations for visitors to assemble without needing staff
assistance.
