DESCRIPTION:
Join Dr. Claire Raftery as she takes us on a tour of modern solar observations, from high-energy solar flares, through to the effects of solar storms on Earth. She will describe some of the process that happen on the Sun that lead to some of the most the spectacular displays on Earth, as well as the challenges that result from living with a star. Claire will provide useful tips on where to get up-to-date space-weather alerts, and give pointers on how to make your very own solar movies using some of the most cutting edge data currently available, from the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
PRESENTER BIO:
Dr. Claire Raftery is a solar physicist who, originally from Ireland, now resides in San Francisco and works at the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley. Claire received her PhD in Solar Physics from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 2010 and moved to the Bay Area to work with the science team of Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) - an instrument designed, built, and commanded out of SSL. Her area of scientific interest lies in the Ultra Violet and X-ray heating of the Sun, along with the connections between solar flares and coronal mass ejections. She is currently working for SSL's Center for Science Education. Putting her understanding of the Sun, the heliosphere, and the Sun-Earth connection to good use, she is assisting in the development of NASA mission projects designed to increase knowledge, interest, and enthusiasm for science across all age groups nationwide.
In her spare time, Claire plays the bagpipes with the Irish Pipers of San Francisco.
ABOUT CALENDAR IN THE SKY:
Calendar in the Sky is a NASA-funded project led by UC Berkeley to engage the American public, particularly Latino audiences, in NASA science (space exploration, astronomy, planetary and Earth sciences, etc.) via the broad interest in Maya culture. We are conducting a series of webinars for educators on NASA science and Maya astronomy. Following the webinars, attendees will be given access to private discussion boards on the project website (www.calendarinthesky.org<http://www.calendarinthesky.org>) where they can discuss the webinar topics and exchange ideas and resources for educational programming with colleagues. The webinars will be recorded and archived on the website.
